It has finally come. After 27 years as Music Director, Bruce Pullan is conducting his last concert with the Vancouver Bach Choir. The theme of this year’s Last Night of the Proms, the 21st year of this annual concert dedicated to all things British, is “Conductor’s Choice”. Maestro Pullan has chosen a programme of works with  special meaning for him. These include Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances (which everyone knows from the musical Kismet), Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs and selections from Carousel. The last half of the concert includes all the traditional British “Proms” music, Jerusalem, Land of Hope and Glory, Rule Britannia and much more.

This will be an evening of nostalgia and fun and maybe even a few tears. As usual, we can expect much raucous singing by the audience led, of course, by the choir. Flags will be waved and streamers thrown. Typically, the audience brings noise-makers, wears bowler hats and boaters and generally  behaves badly. Streamers will be on sale at the Orpheum for those who have come unprepared but don’t want to miss out on the fun. Words of the songs are in the programme so no one is left out. We can also look for the teddy bear competition (Best Bear Dressed as a Performer) and the heart-warming end to the concert when the doors at the back of the hall are flung open and the Children’s Chorus enters, carrying Canadian flags and singing This is my home, oh Canada. Just to set things straight!

Media sponsor is the Vancouver Sun. The Vancouver Bach Choir gratefully acknowledges the continued support of the Canada Council for the Arts, the Province of British Columbia through the British Columbia Arts Council and the City of Vancouver.
